“Not only…but also”是一个很好的连词结构，能够用来连接并列的两个短语或者句子，从而形成具有深度和层次的长句。对于大多数同学来说，提到“not only…but also”引导的句子时，大家都会想到这样一条造句规则：not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装。然而这句话极具误导性，既增加了使用的难度，也并不能真正教会我们如何正确使用这个用处多多的结构。
理解该句型的核心在于理解not only和but also是并列连词，因而其要接并列结构。也就是说，not only后面的结构与but also后面的结构要对称，比如，两者后面接的都是名词、形容词、动词、副词、介词等短语或者都是句子。我们总结出了以下两点，作为“not only…but also”句型的核心知识要点。（记住第一点，慎用第二点就足以70+啦）
1.当“not only…but also”接各种性质的短语时，句子不用倒装；
例如：
a.They claim that insect-based food is not only tasty but also rich in protein.
b.Many would provide funding for not only tuition but also for transportation.
值得注意的是，“not only…but also”在接短语时，要保证not only与but also所接的短语结构一致。
例如：
a.Petroleum is used not only to make fuels but also in plastics.(×)
b.Petroleum is used not only to make fuels but also to make plastics.(√)
c.Petroleum is used not only in fuels but also in plastics.(√)
2.当“not only…but also”接从句或者完整的句子时，“Not only”后面的句子要发生倒装，将动词放在主语之前，“but also”后的句子不发生倒装。
例如：
a.Not only did we figure out a way to describe how we quantify it,but also weve quantified how we tell the difference between crisis and regular economic turmoil.(我们不仅找到了一种方法来描述我们如何量化它，而且我们也量化了我们如何区分危机和正常的经济动荡)
b.Not only did the always interesting Lady Gaga show up inside a large egg-like structure,but also some unknown artists won top prizes.(不仅总是很有趣的Lady Gaga出现在一个巨大的蛋形结构里面，而且不知名的艺术家赢得了最高奖项)
