TheuseofaChristmastreeindoorsappearstohavebeguninGermany.GermanChristianswouldbringtreesintotheirhomestodecorate.InsomeareasevergreentreeswerescarcesothefamilieswouldbuildaChristmaspyramidsimplewoodenstructureswhichtheydecoratedwithbranchesandcandles.
ThetraditionoftheChristmastreeeventuallyspreadthroughoutEurope.TheEnglishRoyaltyhelpspopularizethetreeinEnglandbydecoratingthefirstChristmastreeatWindsorCastlein1841.PrinceAlberthusbandofQueenVictoriadecoratedthefirstEnglishChristmasTreewithcandlescandiesfruitsandgingerbread.
WhentheGermanimmigrantswenttoAmericantheyalsobroughtalongtheirChristmastrees.Inthe1830smostAmericansstillconsideredtheChristmastreeanoddity.OneofthefirstpublicdisplaysofaChristmastreewassetupbyGermanSettlersinPennsylvania.Atthetimemanystillconsideredthetreetobeasymbolofpagansanditwasn untilthelate1800sthatAmericansbeganacceptingtheChristmastree.
