根据教育部发布的《普通高中英语课程标准(实验)》(以下简称《标准》，考生一般应达到《标准》中规定的最低水平，即相当于高中6级。
主要的考试内容包括语音、1500-2000个常用词汇、名词、动词、代词等语法、日常交际用语、阅读、翻译和写作等方面，其中以测试基础语言知识和基于这些知识的基本语言应用能力为重点。
