大沼泽地大沼泽地是一片长约160千米、宽达80----120千米的沼泽区，占据了美国佛罗里州南大部分地区。土著美洲人称大沼泽地为”帕里奥基（即草河之意）。水从奥基乔比湖向南缓慢地流过大沼泽地，进入佛罗里达湾。该地区的大部分地方都覆盖着一种叫锯齿草的芦苇，之所以这样称呼是因为这种草叶片的边缘有一排细小而尖锐的锯齿。这里有着许多小岛，岛上有树木和植物，如桃花心木、棕榈、蕨类、兰花、秋葵等，生长得如热带丛林一样茂密。大沼泽地有着极为丰富的野生动物资源。300多种鸟类每年至少有一段时间生活在这里，尤其是涉水禽鸟，如、白鹭和鹭。这里也有巨龟、蛇、鹮树蛙和海牛。最著名的动物是短吻鳄，过去人类为取它的皮曾滥加捕杀，现在短吻鳄己受到法律的保护。在19世纪，初来的开拓者努力通过排水来将大沼泽地变为农田。最终这项努力停止了，大沼泽地成了国家公园。但是，大沼泽地及其动物的生存仍处于来自污染和人类贪婪的危险之中。
