城市垃圾焚化在大城市附近,一般缺乏垃圾填埋场所,可用焚化法处理垃圾。垃圾经过燃烧,可以减小体积,便于填埋,还可以消灭各种病原体,把一些有毒、有害物质转化为无害物质并可回收热能(见固体废物能源)。露天焚化垃圾是一种古老的处理方法。1874年英国开始建造焚化炉。最早的焚化炉是一种长方形、用泥作壳的车,由马拉着沿街收集居民的垃圾在车上焚烧。20世纪初欧美一些国家建造了近代焚化炉。这种焚化炉内的温度控制在 980℃左右,供应的空气体积相当于垃圾体积的80~120%,焚烧后剩余物体积比原体积缩小50~80%,最多时达90%。后来建造的内壁安装冷却水管的焚化炉,便于保持炉内的适宜温度,可以减少炉子鼓风量,防止由过量空气造成的空气污染,并可供应热水和蒸汽。焚化炉应有除尘、除烟设备,以防止对大气的污染。近年来又发展了高温和中温分解法。高温分解温度在1650~1800℃之间,比一般焚化法高出650~820℃。垃圾可充分燃烧,剩余物仅为原垃圾体积的2~3%。从除尘装置中收集的粉尘也仅为原垃圾体积的 2%。此法是目前最有效的减少垃圾体积的方法。残渣最少而密实,可制成某些产品,又易于运输。但是高温使各种成分熔化粘结于炉壁,因而会增加耐火炉衬消耗;而且高温会增加氮氧化物量,从而增加处理设备和投资。高温分解的副产品是气体和渣,可以将渣做成渣棉或泡沫渣等绝热和建筑材料。此法尚处于研究阶段。中温分解法的温度在1650℃以下,比普通焚化法温度略高,效果介于高温分解法和普通焚化法之间。
