以清幽静雅取胜的洪椿坪，坐落在中山群峰环抱之中。坪上，云雾丰盛，古木葱茏，山鸟长吟，涛声殷殷。清代年间，释永宣朝拜到此，以《洪椿坪》为题写道：“穿萝觅径入椿坪，楼殿层层鹤篆清。因共雨花看贝叶，漫随山色听溪声。”洪椿坪建于明万历年间，原名千佛禅院，以寺外有三株洪椿古树而得名。寺中一联中说：“大椿以八千岁为春，八千岁为秋。”典出自《庄子?逍遥游》。是以“大椿”来比喻洪椿树的古老和寺庙的历史悠久。春夏雨后初霁的早晨，山野空气格外清新，微带凉意；寺宇庭院一尘不染，整洁雅致。此时，山林中，石坪上，庭院里，落起霏霏“晓雨”。这“晓雨”，似雨非雨，如雾非雾，空空??，楼阁、殿字、花木，山石、游人、影壁和壁上“洪椿晓雨”四个大字，以及庭院右侧的林森小院，一切都似飘忽在迷茫的境界中，呈现出一种虚无飘渺的朦胧美。游者或倚立庭院，或漫步寺外，仿佛周身被“晓雨”润湿，但抚摸衣装，丝毫没有被雨水浸湿的痕迹，却顿感清凉和舒适。清康熙四十一年(公元1702年），康熙皇帝御赐“忘尘虑”匾额、“锡飞常近 鹤，杯度不惊鸥”联；乾隆乙丑（公元1745年），乾隆皇帝题赠“洗钵泉和暖，焚香晓更清”联；民国28年（1939年）7月，国民政府主席林森在洪椿坪避暑期间，题赠“护国佑民” 、“大雄宝殿”匾额和“洪椿坪”寺额，至今仍存。第一重大殿的门楣两侧，为清末四川什邡名士冯庆樾撰的“双百字联”（全文见峨眉山志《艺文》篇），其中“晓雨润玉，夕阳灿金，晴烟铺锦，夜月舒练”数句，描述的即是“洪椿晓雨”等洪椿坪诸景色。寺外山崖上的两株洪椿古树，一株仅存下段，枯而不朽，常被人视为“神树”；一株漂浮在“晓雨”的空朦里，树影婆娑，似灰绿的云团，似层叠的浅山。雨因树更奇，树因雨更妙。所谓“晓雨”，科学家解释是雨后初晴时，山林中饱和的湿度，经过凉夜的冷却而蒸发不散的大气。“山行元无雨，空翠湿人衣。”唐代大诗人、山水画大师王维《山中》的这一佳句，再现了“洪椿晓雨”的意境。
