彝语又称罗罗语(Lolo)。属汉藏语系、藏缅语族、彝语支。 主要分布在中国云南、四川、贵州、广西4省(区)以及越南、缅甸、泰国境内。中国境内彝语的使用人口约400余万(1982),分为北部、东部、南部、东南部、西部、中部６个方言。主要语言特点:①塞音、塞擦音、擦音分清浊两套。许多地区的塞音、塞擦音还有带与不带鼻冠音的区别。②除少数方言外，元音一般分松紧，但只在某些声调的音节里构成对立,如北部方言只在33、44两调的音节里对立。③韵母一般由单元音构成，没有塞辅音韵尾，但泰国碧粟彝语有 -p、-t、-k 韵尾。云南、贵州部分地区有少数复元音、鼻化韵和鼻尾韵。④有3～5 个声调，调型简单。⑤词序和虚词是表达语法意义的主要手段，基本语序是主语-宾语-谓语。⑥名词、动词、人称代词作定语时，在中心词前；形容词、数量词作修饰语时，在中心词后。有些副词修饰双音节中心词时，在中心词的两个音节之间。⑦量词丰富，有些方言的量词能直接修饰中心词，起后置冠词的作用。如北部方言量词起不定冠词的作用，东部方言部分地区量词起定冠词的作用。⑧有的方言有标志各种句子成分（包括主语、宾语）的结构助词。⑨一部分动词的自动态和使动态，用辅音清浊交替表示，如威宁彝语ɡu55（穿衣）、ku55（使穿）。⑩有些方言以谓语动词、形容词的重叠、变调表示疑问， 如凉山彝语 dz嚕33（吃）、 dz嚕44dz嚕33（吃吗？）单音的词和词根占优势;构词后缀多,前缀少；复合词多，单纯词少。四音格联绵词较丰富。
