铁路集装箱运输铁路使用集装箱进行的货物运输。是铁路货物运输的种类之一。1853年美国铁路企业开始办理集装箱运输，但由于各部门使用的箱型不同，管理分散，未得到发展。第二次世界大战时期，美国为了安全、迅速而简便地输送军用物资，大量采用集装箱运输。战后各国相继发展了铁路集装箱运输。当前中国铁路集装箱运输重点是解决铁路零担货物运输，主要采用1吨和5吨通用集装箱。随着集装箱运输和拖车式集装箱运输的发展，铁路集装箱运输组织工作也获得新的发展，编开了集装箱定期直达列车和集装箱专用列车。集装箱定期直达列车 1965年11月，英国开始在伦敦和格拉斯哥之间编开了集装箱定期直达列车。这种列车定点、定线、定期、固定车底，循环运行于两个基地站间，不需重新编组，因此运行速度快、效率高。美国开行集装箱定期直达列车的运行速度通常与旅客列车相同，利用电子计算机编制计划、掌握运输情况和动态、处理运输报告和控制集装箱的装卸等，实现了全部作业过程的自动化。目前，日本、联邦德国、法国，爱尔兰、丹麦、西班牙、民主德国和波兰等国铁路也相继编开了这种列车。对于零星运送的小批量的集装箱，往往不能为集装箱定期直达列车所吸收，但又急需及时运送时，则可编入快运货物列车进行运送。集装箱专运列车 一般是指在港口站编组开行的列车。当集装箱船到达港口时，在24小时内即可卸空，除到达港所在地区和近距离的集装箱可由汽车输送外，运程较远的集装箱则组织集装箱专运列车运送。由于集装箱船航行易受天气等自然条件的影响，到港日期不很准确，集装箱的去向和到站又不一致，因此，集装箱专用列车虽在列车运行图上有专门的运行线，但只能不定期地编组开行。
