"应用技术卫星"美国多用途技术试验卫星系列。英文缩写为 ATS。从1966年12月到1974年5月共发射6颗。它的主要任务是为进一步发展通信、气象、导航、地球资源勘测等应用卫星进行各种技术试验和研究。"应用技术卫星"1～5号为第一代卫星，6号为第二代卫星。除2号预定为9600公里圆轨道外,其余都采用地球静止卫星轨道。但2号和4号卫星没能达到预定轨道，5号卫星获部分成功。1号和3号卫星都采用自旋稳定的姿态控制方式（见人造卫星自旋稳定）。它们主要进行了下列试验：①空间-地面和船-岸之间的话音通信；②传输全球云层分布图；③试验卫星导航；④试验相控阵天线和机械消旋天线；⑤验证卫星稳定和位置保持技术等。采用重力梯度稳定姿态控制方式的 2、4、5号卫星还试验了C、L波段和毫米波的无线电通信和传播。6号卫星是这个卫星系列中取得成果最多的一颗,曾在静止轨道上多次移位，进行了广泛的试验。它为1975年7月美、苏"阿波罗-联盟"号飞船对接活动提供了通信支援。1975年 8月租给印度向其边远地区试播了一年教育电视节目。6号卫星采用三轴稳定姿态控制方式(见航天器姿态控制)。它的主要试验项目有:①在空间展开直径为9.15米的大型天线；②试验三轴稳定的定向平台；③通信试验，包括对飞机的通信和导航，向农村小型电视接收设备和城镇转播站广播电视节目,调查C波段地面无线电射频干扰源,研究毫米波的传播和通信可靠性,验证实用型的跟踪和数据中继卫星技术；④气象观测，包括昼夜拍摄高分辨率云图、气象通信和验证用静止卫星对全球气象观测的可行性；⑤科学试验，包括测定电离层和外大气层电子含量，研究电离层传播效应，测定空间物理环境对太阳电池老化的影响;⑥工程技术试验,包括鉴定卫星热控制性能，验证卫星基本形状与频率的关系，试验微型离子推进系统，进行13吉赫和18吉赫电波传输试验，搜集雨致衰减数据。
