这是一帧纸本小品镜片，纵49、横27厘米。画面上，磐石托山尊，尊者如石翁，坐地迎风雨，疑是襄王梦。石旁枯木微弯，疏枝摇曳蔽石，两侧丛篁婆娑为伴。石围根隙间，小草簇簇密生，一种幽静古雅景象，显现画中。水墨写意间，以淡墨勾皴为主，竹与草深墨写之，浓淡分明，逸趣盎然，有苏轼枯木竹石笔意，不失文人画一格。左上行书题五言一首，致情托兴：“古木挺虬干，丛篁低翠枝，襄王何深梦，石上雨来时。”款署“墨林项元汴。”下钤朱文“子京父印”，钤首圆形朱文印“木隽 李”。左右压角各钤“项元汴”（朱）、“项叔子”（白）二印。题诗后二句，说的是宋玉“高唐”、“神女”二赋中故事：昔襄王游高唐台，怠而昼寝，梦巫山之女，因幸之。临别女辞曰：“妾在巫山之阳，高邱之山且，旦为朝云，暮为行雨，朝朝暮暮，阳台之下……”又说：襄王与宋玉游于云梦之浦，其夜王寝，梦与神女遇。项元汴，字子京，号墨林，别有退密斋主人、香严居士、惠泉山樵、鸳鸯湖长、漆园傲吏、静因庵主人等诸号；因地因典，各有寓意。浙江嘉兴人，明国子生。生于明嘉靖四年（1525年），卒于万历十八年（1590年），享年66岁。精鉴赏，家资富饶，广搜前代书法名画，“储藏之丰，甲于江南。”毕生所收，多为世间绝品，且佳话广传，为明代著名鉴藏家。项元汴也是一位多能的书画家；书法“出入智永、赵孟兆页，山水画学黄公望、倪瓒”。墨竹梅兰，“天真雅淡，亦有逸趣。”为吴派名家之一。相传，其作画有音员 语书题之习。“然辞句多累”，人乞其画者，先以青钱三百饣鬼 小童，伺画毕，即加印记取去，以免题识，谓之“免题钱”。风趣所及，好题如此，却有画蛇添足之赘。岁月沧桑，惜其传世遗墨无多，民间珍藏，尤为稀见。《枯木竹石图》上，作者上下共钤四印，其中“木隽李”圆章，系项氏记籍之印；木隽李即嘉兴。《春秋·定公十四年》：“於越败吴于木隽李。”即此，后为嘉兴别称。不言“嘉兴”而钤“木隽李”，颇有思古溯源之意。项元汴另有闲章曰“古木隽李狂儒墨林山房史籍印”，见钤于钱选《浮玉山居图》藏画，可证。至今所见，项氏传世刻印一百余方，名号、闲章，琳琳琅琅，记录了他辛劳一生的书画情趣及鉴藏心赏的简历，亦为画坛一奇！
