建筑设计机构从事建筑设计工作的组织，有建筑设计院、建筑设计室、建筑设计公司、建筑设计事务所、建设公司设计部等名称。中国、苏联和东欧国家多采用建筑设计院、建筑设计室的形式。中国的设计院（室）分三级管理：部属设计院，省、自治区和直辖市设计院，省辖市设计院和地区、县的设计室。在建筑设计院或建筑设计室内拥有建筑、结构、设备（包括给水排水、供暖、空调）、电气、工艺、经济等方面的各种专业人员，可进行完整的建筑设计。其规模多则上千人，少则几十人。业务范围一般为民用或工业建筑设计，有的还从事设计咨询、可行性研究、勘探测量和设计技术审定等工作。有些国家规定建筑设计机构的主要技术人员必须经过考核，取得不同等级的执照后方可承担规定范围内的设计任务。西欧和美国等多采用建筑设计公司和建筑设计事务所的形式。这些国家的许多中小建筑设计公司或建筑设计事务所，一般只有建筑、结构两个主要专业的设计人员；承接任务时，在建筑方案确定之后，往往将其他专业设计工作包给专业设计公司或事务所去完成。日本还采用建设公司的形式，这类公司大都拥有设计、科学研究和施工等方面的力量，可承担工程设计和施工的全部工作。中国在1953年以前的建筑设计机构也采用建筑设计公司和建筑设计事务所的形式，以后采用设计院和建筑设计室。从80年代开始实行经济改革，又出现了不同类型的建筑设计机构。
