疾病的预防避免疾病发生的医疗措施，是医学科学重要的组成部分，包括传染病和非传染病的预防，也包括避免急性病转为慢性病的措施。传染病预防 预防措施主要针对疾病传播的三个环节：①消灭传染源，如消灭生活环境中的病原体，中止病人和带菌者的排菌；②截断传播途径，如消毒饮水和食物，消灭媒介生物，消毒病人排泄遗物，以及各种疾病隔离措施；③减少易感人群，如开展免疫接种以提高人群免疫力，当易感人群降低到一定比例之下，疾病既无法流行起来。由此看来，治疗现病人，防止进一步传播，也是一种预防。非传染病、慢性病的预防 依据目前对疾病的认识可分为三级预防：一级为病因预防；二级为早发现、早诊断、早治疗；三级为对症治疗，防止伤残和加强康复工作。疾病自然史和三级预防的关系见表。① 一级预防。又称病因预防或初级预防。主要是针对病因采取相应的措施,防止疾病的发生,是控制和消灭疾病的根本措施。一级预防的工作有两个方面。一是一般的开展群众性的卫生工作,改善人们的卫生条件,增进保护人群健康的措施，包括加强锻炼，合理营养；改变不良的生活和卫生习惯，如戒烟、戒酒等。保护改善环境以保证人们的生产和生活区的空气、水、土壤不受工业"三废"(废气、废水、废渣)和生活"三废"（粪便、污水、垃圾）以及农药、化肥等的污染。二是采取特殊的保护措施，如通过预防接种，以预防某些传染病的发生；对地方性甲状腺肿地区长期供应碘盐；改进工矿企业的工艺流程,改善劳动条件,以防止职业病的发生。② 二级预防。通过普查，定期健康检查和设立专门的防治机构来达到早发现、早诊断、早治疗疾病的目的。如普查时通过胸部透视可发现肺结核、肺癌和心脏病。二级预防措施不仅可以减少病人痛苦，而且可以减轻社会负担、保护劳动力。③ 三级预防。包括对症治疗，防止伤残和加强康复的措施。疾病进入后期阶段，病情比较严重，有可能劳动力丧失时，应采取措施防止疾病恶化，对症治疗以减少痛苦，延长寿命，同时还应积极进行康复工作。
