大坝安全自动监控系统利用电子计算机实现大坝观测数据的自动采集和自动处理，对大坝性态正常与否作出初步判断和分级报警的观测系统。其作用是：①能从观测数据及时察觉观测系统或大坝性态的异常,便于及时采取措施加以处理,比人工识别事故远为快捷。②观测成果准确可靠，系统具有自校、检验和误差修正功能，对超值测值可以剔除并报警。这样保证了观测成果的可靠性，且在测量和数据处理过程中人工干预极少。因此，人为误差基本不存在。③能够大量节省用于观测、绘图、计算、维护所需要的人工费用。由于这三方面的作用，自动化监测系统在保证大坝安全运行方面与人工观测相比，具有十分显著的优越性。大坝安全自动监控系统分为在线监控系统和离线监控系统两部分。在线监控系统 由安装或埋设在大坝上的观测传感器、遥测集线箱和自动监控微型电子计算机（微机）系统组成。观测传感器 用于反映大坝和坝基工作状态和环境影响因素的变化量，布置在坝体、坝基和主要建筑物的特定位置上。观测传感器有电阻式、 电感式、 电容式、钢弦式以及其他形式。常用的有应变计、温度计、孔隙水压力计、测缝计、基岩变形计、垂线坐标仪、引张线遥测仪、倾斜仪和渗漏量遥测仪等各种观测项目的遥测仪器。遥测集线箱 通常安装在观测传感器附近，是实现巡回检测时用以切换测点的专用设备。有一类集线箱本身具备模数转换功能，能将传感器输出的模拟量变换为便于传输的数字量。自动安全监控微机系统 以大容量微机为核心，连接各种类型传感器的检测装置及相应外部设备组成，有专用的检测管理软件和数据处理软件支持，实现下述功能：①对传感器进行高精度测量，根据需要选定巡回检测或单点测量等不同方式。②对测值进行检验和修正误差，对异常测值进行报警。③对正常测值进行整编、计算，将观测成果存入数据库或按需要的方式输出。④对观测成果的发展变化及各种变化量之间的相关性进行分析。⑤利用预报模型进行计算，将计算值和实测值对比。⑥对分析对比后的超差值按不同情况进行报警，以便管理人员查明原因采取措施。⑦对观测系统各部位进行检查、分析、判断，显示故障位置，以便维修处理。离线监控系统 通常设置在观测资料分析中心或有关的管理机构内，用以实现对几座或几十座大坝的观测数据进行集中管理，由一定容量的电子计算机、相应的外部设备和专用的数据管理软件组成。大坝在线系统的观测数据由各种媒介或通信方式传送到离线系统，进行下述处理：①检验、修正、整理观测资料和成果，并存入数据库。②对长系列观测资料进行初步分析，研究观测物理量之间的相关性及长期变化趋势。③对长系列观测资料进行系统分析，建立安全监控用的数学模型（见观测资料分析）。④利用数学模型进行观测物理量的预报，并进一步和实测资料比较，实现大坝安全监控（见图）。⑤输出规定的图表和文件，存入档案。发展简史 20世纪60年代以前，大坝的观测和安全控制以人工为主。60～70年代的中，为了加强大坝安全监测，许多国家研究改进观测系统，实现了观测数据采集的自动化，日本、西班牙、意大利、法国、美国、苏联等国家有很多大坝安装了自动数据采集系统；同时在资料计算方面应用了计算机，加快了观测成果的反馈速度。70年代后期，意大利致力于利用微机实现在线安全监控的研究，80年代中期已在十几座坝上应用，同时建立了集中的离线处理中心，使大坝安全监控达到了新的水平。中国在大坝安全监控自动化方面的研究工作是20世纪70年代后期开始的，到80年代中期已经实现了差动电阻式仪器的数据采集和处理自动化，在湖南省东江水电站的拱坝上建立了第一套实用系统（见彩图）。大坝安全监控方面总的发展趋向是研制更为准确可靠的自动化系统，研究应力、渗流等观测物理量的监控模型，研究更具智能性的数据处理专家系统等，使大坝安全监控更为有效。
