定量分析对社会现象的数量特征、数量关系与数量变化的分析。其功能在于揭示和描述社会现象的相互作用和发展趋势。社会学中的定量分析是与经验性的社会研究一起发展起来的。经验性的社会研究传统中有两个重要部分，一是有关国家事物资料的搜集和量化，二是搜集与分析资料的技术的发展。在社会研究中，定量化的传统一方面源于英国的"政治算术"，另一方面源于比利时和法国的道德统计学。前者是将描述统计用于国家政策与行政工作，后者主要用于研究犯罪、自杀与非法行为等。直到第二次世界大战前，定量研究主要是搜集与社会现象有关的实际数据的统计工作。第二次世界大战后，社会调查与分析中引入了抽样理论和统计检验理论，推广了社会测量法并发展了交互分类技术，使定量分析取得了长足的进展，最终导致了社会统计学的创立。社会统计学是有关社会资料搜集、整理、分析和推论的一整套科学方法。它不仅包含全部抽样理论、统计检验理论和大部分社会测量法，而且使分析技术获得极大发展，主要是多变量统计分析技术的发展，如路径分析、多元回归分析、因子分析等。20世纪70年代以后，美国社会学家发展了数理社会学。它的特点是通过建立数学模型来分析与说明社会现象,例如:用马尔可夫链模型分析代际间的社会流动；以对策理论为基础的社会交往模型对团体结构与群体行动的力学分析；用矩阵理论进行的小群体结构与关系的分析；70年代后期利用协同学理论建立的反映社会突变现象的模型等。后者称为定量社会学。社会统计学和数理社会学的发展，电子计算机的广泛运用，大大推动了社会学的定量分析，以致在有些国家（如美国）的社会学研究中,如果忽视了数量分析,它的研究价值就难以被社会承认。美国有影响的学术刊物《美国社会学评论》和《美国社会学杂志》，在1940～1941年间刊登的文章中，定量研究的文章占53％，到了1965～1966年则达到85％。社会现象同自然现象一样，具有质与量两个方面的规定性，对社会现象的定量分析与定性分析缺一不可。定量分析比定性分析更加精确与精细。但由于社会现象难于测量，对它的量化过程有着与自然现象不同的特点。对它的定量分析充满困难，单纯的定量研究有时很可能将人们引入歧途。数学方法在社会研究中应用的扩大，物理、化学、生物等自然科学研究方法对社会学研究方法的渗透，给社会学的定量分析开辟了广阔前景，定量分析与定性分析的完美结合是社会学研究的正确方向。
