容器式管道输送装置利用空气的静压力在管道内压送或吸送装有物料的容器的一种气力输送装置。1861年，伦敦的邮局建造了第一条容器式管道输送装置的实用线。此后，在柏林、巴黎、维也纳和慕尼黑等城市也相继建成了这种输送装置，用于邮局、银行、医院和图书馆输送邮件、传票和试样。因输送的容器较小，呈小桶状，这种输送装置又称为气送桶。在解决了大型容器停止时的冲击和管子的制造等技术问题后，联邦德国于1964年在汉堡建成一条管径为 450毫米、容器两端装有走轮、输送距离为2200米的压送式管道输送装置的实用线。70年代，苏联、美国和日本也相继建造了大型的容器式管道输送装置。这种输送装置的营运费用低，运行安全可靠；管道可架空或埋入地下，不与其他运输工具干扰；运行不受气候限制，不污染环境；可在企业内外甚至城市间输送各种物料。但这种输送装置的初始投资大，建成后改线困难。容器式管道输送装置由气源站、管道、容器、接收站和电气控制系统组成（图1）。① 气源站:采用离心鼓风机或罗茨鼓风机提高空气动力。在发送站、接收站和分道汇流站还要有辅助风机。运距长时，要根据需要设若干个中继加压站。一般在水平段每千米长度需要0.05～0.15兆帕的气压。② 管道:一般有两条管道，分别供有载容器和空载容器运行。管道的断面形状为圆形或方形，断面大小取决于容器尺寸。如果需要多处发料或卸料，则要有分道汇流站。为保持管道内的压力并使容器能顺利进出管道，在发送站、接收站和分道汇流站安装有闸阀，形成变压段。闸阀还能截断气路，形成空气压缩区，使到达的容器平稳减速。③ 容器:由壳体、走轮和承压板组成(图2)。容器的大小和形状根据所需的输送能力和物料特性确定。容器可以是单个的，也可数个成列；可以有盖，也可无盖；其断面可以是圆形或方形。容器运行速度一般为30公里/时。④ 发送站:完成空载容器的接收、装料和有载容器的发送等工作。根据输送能力的要求，每隔一定时间发送一只（列）容器，在整条管道内形成容器、空气相互间隔排列的长队。容器两端的承压板上承受不同的压力，借压差推动容器运行。⑤ 接收站:完成有载容器的接收、卸料和空载容器发送等工作。它的运转应与发送站相互协调。⑥ 电气控制系统:控制容器式管道输送装置按程序有节奏地工作。容器式管道输送装置除用空气推动外，也有用水来推动的。其特点是可在倾斜度大，甚至在垂直管线中输送；水有较大的浮力，输送时能耗可相对减少；输送速度小时噪声很小，但要求水密性好。
