自动气象站由电子设备或由计算机控制，自动进行气象观测和资料收集传输的气象站。（见彩图）有线遥测气象站 气象仪器的感应部分同读数或记录仪表相隔几十米到几公里，中间利用有线通信电路传输进行观测的气象站。它的遥测系统包括感应元件非电量-电量变换器、有线通信电路， 以及显示仪器和自计仪器。这种遥测系统多用于实时查询气象资料比较频繁的部门，例如机场。由于电信传输和电子计算机的发展，一般气象站网的观测站也开始向遥测过渡，进行单项或多项要素的遥测。有些国家已开始建立遥测网，有的由中心站计算机控制几十个站台，实现观测、资料收集自动化；有的已开始筹建规模较大的遥测网，甚至是全国性的遥测网。无线遥测气象站 又称无人气象站。它是由电子线路自动控制，定时观测和发报的小型气象站。它包括测量系统、程序控制和编码发射系统、电源三部分。气象要素转换成电信号的方式种类很多。常见的有机械编码式和低频调制式两种。前者多使用机械位移的感应元件，使指针在码盘上位移而发出不同的电码；后者多使用电性能变化的感应元件，使它产生一个低频变化的信号，然后将此信号载于射频上发射。无人气象站一般能连续工作一年左右，每天定时观测4～24次,可在几百公里到一千公里之外按时收到它拍发的气象电报，还有利用卫星收集和转发资料的无人气象站。无人气象站一般用于沙漠、高山和海洋等人烟稀少的地区。在海洋上的包括漂浮和固定的两种。
