红外探测器接收红外辐射并把红外辐射变换成另一种便于测量的物理量的仪器。探测器按探测过程的作用原理分为两类：热探测器和量子探测器。在热探测器中，辐射被黑色表面吸收产生热效应。常用的量子探测器有两种类型：一种是把辐射量子吸入晶体改变晶体导电率的光电导管；一种是P-N结接收辐射后产生光伏电势的光电池。探测器的主要参量有：响应度、噪声等效功率、时间常数等。响应度是探测器接收单位辐射后产生相应效应的大小。分光响应度（或称光谱响应度）指在不同波长处的响应度。不同类型探测器的分光响应度有很大差别。量子探测器有一个长波截止限，波长随探测器所用材料而异。同时，量子探测器的响应与所吸收的量子数对应。如果保持单位波长间隔辐射能量不变，波长越长包含的量子数越多，探测器的响应率也越高。因此，量子探测器的分光响应曲线是沿着长波方向递升，到了截止波长限附近，就急剧下降为零。相反，由于热探测器是以黑体吸收原理为基础，它的分光响应度在广阔的波长范围内是平坦的，即其响应对波长无选择性。探测器噪声的大小是衡量它可探测最小辐射能力的参量，常用噪声等效功率(NEP)表示。时间常数代表探测器从接受辐射到呈现反应的惯性。一般说来，量子探测器的时间常数比热探测器小得多。从结构上讲,除只有一个敏感元的单元探测器外,还有由许多单元探测器组成的多元阵列探测器。多元阵列探测器在进行天空普查和对延伸源进行细致的分辨测量时，效率比单元探测器高得多。另外各种红外电视器件也正在发展中。一些新的探测技术，如红外干涉仪和红外转换等，都已在探测天体方面作过有意义的试验。参考书目R.
