社区纵向格局一个社区的各社会单位和子系统与外部社区的结构和功能关系。社区纵向格局体现了地方社区与大社会的联系，并受大社会的制约。美国社会学家R.L.沃伦着重分析了社会宏观体系对地方社区的影响，并以"社区纵向格局"的概念来分析现代社区。交通的发达、大众传播媒介的扩展、科层制的发展，促进了现代社区内各社会单位的外向联系的发展，打破了传统社区的封闭性;业缘关系的发达,使各个部门或行业有了更广泛的空间分布，分支机构散布于不同的地方社区。这些分散于不同社区的分支机构的人员安排、所需的多种服务以及重大决策，主要取决于地方社区之外的主管部门，其组织活动与发展的取向也在本社区之外，使这些单位成为社区外系统的组合部分。如大公司的分厂、分店,各部门和上级政府驻地方的办事机构,既与自身隶属系统保持联系，又与所处社区发生种种关系。除这些社区单位之外，有的社区成员的工作单位和居住单位不在同一社区，其交往范围也不限于本社区。社区纵向格局结构的外部联系是多层次、多元化的，有行政上的联系，也有经济、文化和宗教上的联系等。有的社区单位不仅在社区内有一定的服务区和交易区，还向社区外单位提供服务，如旅游机构；有的社区单位的对外功能是专一的，有的则是多样的。就隶属关系来说，处于某一社区里的单位与处于另一社区里的本系统的总部具有隶属关系；反之，一社区里的企事业总部通过直接或间接的控制手段，对分布在其他社区的分支机构施加影响，这里存在着领导和隶属关系。纵向格局的功能关系主要表现在地方单位向外界提供人、财、物或信息，并将其纳入社区外大系统；同时这些单位又作为社区外系统的地方场所，接受服务，参与社区外系统的决策过程。有的单位是主管部门，则向社区之外的本系统提供行政指导、规章制度、协作和其他服务。这种外向关系一般带有法理性、计划性和科层化特征。社区是由横向格局和纵向格局组成的网络。随着社区纵向格局的加强，社区内部分工扩大，社区凝聚力和自主性呈减弱趋势，乡村社区趋于城市化，社区内部的利益分化加强，社区价值观发生变化，同时出现了科层化的趋势和社区功能的转化。这种状况反映了较小社区与较大社会的依赖关系。
