目标散射被探测物体或物质结构使入射无线电波在各个方向上的再辐射。其中,在无线电波入射方向相反方向上的再辐射,称为后向散射。目标有离散的和连续的两类。如按照散射特性,则有面目标和体目标之别。前者的散射特性主要取决于目标的表面层;而对后者,入射波则可透入其内部,并在其中各处受到局部结构的散射。一个目标究竟属于面目标还是体目标,取决于波长、目标的致密程度及其电特性等。目标散射特性通常包括散射截面、频谱响应、传播时延、极化特性和多普勒效应等。它们与目标的结构、大小、形状、取向、数量、位置和运动等特性紧密相联系。了解这种联系就可能设计出合适的遥测器或遥感器,使之能有效地识别一定类型的目标,并定量地确定目标特征。不过,遥测器、遥感器的特性和中间介质也常常影响目标散射信号,特别是信号形式、天线方向性和极化的影响尤甚。目标散射研究包括两个方面:①研究各种已知目标的散射信号特性;②研究具备一定散射信号特性的目标特性。前者是正问题,是解决后者的基础和关键,包括基础理论研究和基础数据测量。目标散射模式是理论研究的关键性问题。而后者是逆问题,更接近于工程技术研究。目标散射研究涉及对各种军事目标、各种地球资源,以及大气和地质结构等的遥测、遥感技术。遥测和遥感技术已经成功地用于军事、气象、地质、水文、土地利用和农作物调查等许多方面,在工程上已涉及到飞机、飞船、导弹和大气结构等空中目标,舰只、车辆、人群、海面、水面、陆地、森林和农作物等地面目标,及某些浅层地下目标。
