激光通信利用激光作为传输信息的载体进行的通信。激光和无线电波一样同属于电磁波。激光的频率成分比较单纯,容易进行调制,而且方向性极好,光束散开角很小,是一种很理想的光载波。激光通信中各个信道之间不会互相干扰,能避免中短波、微波通信中经常发生的同频干扰和邻频干扰现象。激光的频率很高,频段极宽,按理论计算,可容纳上百亿个话路,可传上千万套电视节目,潜在的通信容量极大。激光作为光载波传送信息,可以经过大气传输,也可经光纤维传输。经过大气传输,光信号会受到严重衰减,大气中的任何意外飞行物体的遮挡,都可使通信中断,人们已利用大气进行光通信试验多年,进展不大。但是,激光通信象微波通信一样,不需敷设线路,方向性好,对于近距离机动通信,尤其对新闻信息的现场采访传输,仍有一定的实用价值。在没有大气影响的宇宙空间完成卫星之间的通信,利用激光进行传输是大有前途的。为避免大气传输所带来的缺欠,已研制出损耗较小的光导纤维。如果通过光导纤维传输,构成光纤通信,就传输稳定,大大减少传输损耗。光纤通信保密性好,不受外界电磁干扰,有极广阔的应用前景。20世纪80年代以来,光纤通信发展迅速。中国也建立了不少光纤通信的实用电路。
