国际戏剧协会受联合国教育、科学及文化组织资助的国际戏剧组织。1946年，教科文组织提出关于建立一个有利于教科文组织开展活动和发展戏剧事业的国际戏剧协会的备忘录，同年在教科文组织首届大会上通过。1947年教科文组织在巴黎召开有15个国家25名戏剧专家参加的会议，讨论有关国际戏剧协会的计划，并提出章程。在此基础上,国际戏剧协会于1948年6月在捷克斯洛伐克首都布拉格成立，有18国代表参加首届大会，选举英国著名剧作家J.B.普里斯特利(1894～)任首届主席。大会上，普里斯特利对国际戏剧协会的宗旨做如下表述："戏剧在促进国际间的彼此了解方面有着特殊重要的意义。"国际戏剧协会会址设在巴黎。成立以来，已有会员国50多个、联系国10多个，各会员国都设有一个国际戏剧协会国家中心。 自1951年以来每2年举行一次大会。常设委员会有音乐委员会、新戏剧委员会、第三世界委员会、 舞蹈委员会、剧作家委员会和研究委员会。6个常设委员会经常在两届大会之间召集各种形式的国际戏剧学术讨论会，使不同戏剧观念和表演、导演理论与实践、戏剧创作中面临的种种问题获得交流和探讨的机会。此外,1957～1972年间，在法国政府赞助下,先后在巴黎举办了16届国际戏剧节，1975年以后改为每年在不同国家举办。这项活动大大活跃了戏剧艺术的国际交流。中国于1980年5月正式参加国际戏剧协会,中国中心设于北京。
