中国社会科学院外国文学研究所建立于1964年 9月24日。是在原来中国科学院文学研究所的东方、西方、苏联、东欧文学4个研究组和《世界文学》编辑部的基础上建立起来的。首任所长冯至。1977年中国社会科学院成立后，隶属该院，冯至仍任所长，1982年起叶水夫任所长。现任所长张羽，冯至任名誉所长。该所研究员有著名学者潘家洵、卞之琳、罗大冈、罗念生、戈宝权、杨季康等，兼聘研究员有季羡林、田德望、杨宪益、王佐良。外国文学研究所的基本方针和任务是以马克思列宁主义、毛泽东思想为指导,坚持理论联系实际的原则,探讨和研究马克思主义文艺理论及其发展、世界无产阶级文学运动历史和经验、现当代外国文学创作、思潮和流派、外国古典文学创作和理论遗产,并通过研究工作,培养以马克思主义为指导的外国文学研究人材，为繁荣和发展中国的社会主义文艺事业以及社会主义精神文明和物质文明建设服务。建所以来，已出版的论著有：《法国文学史》（上、中册）、《美国文学简史》（上、下册）、《苏联文学史论文集》、《论当代苏联作家》、《罗摩衍那初探》、《论罗曼·罗兰》、《布莱希特戏剧印象记》、《春泥集》、《裴多菲评传》、《论遗产及其他》、《法国文学论集》等。已出版的资料有：《外国文学研究资料丛书》(已出30余种)。此外，与人民文学出版社、上海译文出版社联合编辑《马克思主义文艺理论丛书》、《外国古典文艺理论丛书》、《外国文学名著丛书》等 3套丛书已出100余种,其中包括世界各国著名的文艺理论著作和作品。研究所现设有外国文艺理论、东北亚和东南亚文学、南亚和西亚非洲文学、苏联文学、东欧文学、英美文学、中北欧和希腊罗马文学、南欧拉美文学、外国文学现状研究等 9个研究室，《世界文学》（双月刊）、《外国文学研究资料丛刊》和《文艺理论译丛》等 3个编辑部。另外设有科研处、图书资料室等科研辅助机构。
